The cardholder told their bank one of three things: they canceled the recurring payment and were billed again, they never authorized a recurring arrangement at all, or a digital-goods purchase went through without proper controls.
It is Mastercard's mirror of Visa's 13.2. Same customer, same story, different network: someone tried to stop a subscription and the billing didn't stop.
What causes a 4841 chargeback?
- A cancellation request that was never processed, or processed after one more rebill escaped.
- A cancellation flow hard enough that the customer's bank was the easier path.
- A recurring arrangement the customer says they never knowingly agreed to.
- Digital-goods purchases, often in-app, made without the account holder's knowledge.
Why do subscription businesses get 4841?
If your customers pay by Mastercard, this is the code your cancellation problems arrive under. Every 4841 is the same event as a 13.2: a customer who tried to leave and ended up at their bank instead of your cancel button.
Treat 4841 and 13.2 as one metric with two names. If one is rising, the other is too, and the fix is identical: cancellations that work instantly, confirmed in writing.
Can a chargeback alert stop 4841?
Ethoca catches 4841 before it becomes a chargeback.
The customer contacts their bank first, which is when Ethoca, Mastercard's alert network, sees the dispute. Refund through the alert and no chargeback files, so nothing counts toward Mastercard's Excessive Chargeback Program. Then fix the cancellation flow, because the alert only saves the dispute that already happened.
Alerts are one of the two levers here. See how RDR, CDRN and Ethoca work together, and check where your ratio stands before the letter checks it for you.
How do you respond to a 4841 dispute?
You win 4841 by proving the charge came before any valid cancellation, or that the recurring terms were agreed to. Send:
- The date and channel of any cancellation request, or a statement that none exists in your records.
- The recurring terms the customer accepted at signup, with the billing schedule visible.
- Proof the disputed charge was processed before the cancellation took effect.
- Usage logs showing the customer used the service after they claim they canceled.
- Your cancellation confirmation, if the customer canceled and is disputing an earlier valid charge.
Your processor sets your response deadline, usually 20 to 30 days from the chargeback.
How do you prevent 4841?
- Make canceling self-serve and instant, and stop billing the moment the request lands.
- Send written cancellation confirmation the customer can show their bank.
- State the recurring terms at signup, next to the button, not in linked fine print.
- Put a cancel link in every receipt and renewal reminder.
The cardholder gets 120 days to file. You usually get 20 to 30 days to respond. And the dispute counts the day it files, win or lose, which is why prevention beats response.
FAQ
Is Mastercard 4841 the same as Visa 13.2?
Functionally, yes. Both file when a customer says a recurring charge continued after cancellation or was never agreed to. 4841 is Mastercard's code, 13.2 is Visa's. If your cancellation flow has a problem, you will see both rise together, and the same fixes stop both.
Can chargeback alerts stop 4841?
Yes. The customer contacts their bank first, so Ethoca sees the dispute before it becomes a chargeback. Refund through the alert and no chargeback files, which keeps it out of Mastercard's Excessive Chargeback Program count.
What evidence wins a 4841 dispute?
Proof the charge preceded any valid cancellation: the date and channel of the cancellation request or its absence from your records, the recurring terms the customer accepted, and usage after the claimed cancellation. If they did cancel, your confirmation and the effective date decide it.
Does 4841 count toward Mastercard's monitoring program?
Yes. Every 4841 that becomes a chargeback counts toward Mastercard's Excessive Chargeback Program, win or lose. Disputes resolved through an Ethoca alert before filing never become chargebacks, so they don't count, which is the argument for catching them early.
